This building was built about 1816 and is one of the oldest structures in Los Angeles. It was originally built as a mill, then used as a home starting around the time the United States took over California in 1846.
The walls are between 3 1/2' and 5' thick and were built to withstand earthquakes.
The landscaping is largely native plants and the entrance below illustrates the variety of growth that requires very little water to survive.
The front door enters into the upper story where
the mill wheels were used.
